The Fine Arts Foundation was honored at the Denver Lyric Opera Guild’s April Opera to celebrate the winners of the DLOG 2016 Competition for Colorado Singers. The Denver Lyric Opera Guild is one of FAF’s 2015 Grant Recipients.
The Denver Lyric Opera Guild was founded in 1965 with the objective of the encouragement and support of young singers and the continuing education of members in the appreciation and knowledge of opera. The Guild hosts a number of events, but each year our signature event is the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition for Colorado Singers.
There are four events associated with our Competition – the Master Class, Preliminaries, Finals and the Awards Luncheon. As the name implies, this is a competition for singers age 23 through 33 who are either Colorado residents or currently attending a Colorado college or university.
Each year a total of over $30,000 in prize money is awarded to our top fifteen singers. Participants can be students working on their degree or young professionals in the early stages of a career in opera. Either way they incur serious expenses in either tuition; private voice, language or acting lessons; travel to auditions; head shots and recordings to name just a few. The prize money awarded by DLOG helps our young singers cover some of these expenses so they can continue to pursue their dream of singing on the operatic stage. Over the 32 years the Competition has been in existence, DLOG has awarded over $700,000 in prize money to deserving young Colorado Singers.
The Denver Lyric Opera Guild brings in a panel of three judges from across the country for the Preliminaries and a different panel of judges for the Finals. Following both the Preliminary and Final rounds of the competition, any singer who is interested has the opportunity to meet with the judges one-on-one to get feedback on their performance.
Judges over the past several years have come to us from such prestigious venues as the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, St. Louis Opera, and Rice University to name just a few. Many auditions, like a competition, are a “one and done process” so this chance to get advice from top people in the industry can be invaluable to a young singer. This is where the Fine Arts Foundation comes into the picture. The generous grant from the Fine Arts Foundation is used by the Denver Lyric Opera Guild to help cover our judges’ expenses. The grant from the Fine Arts Foundation allows us to bring in world class judges to help choose our winners and to provide feedback not just to our winners but to all of our participants. This helps to make the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition for Colorado Singers an invaluable learning experience for forty to fifty young Colorado opera singers each year and makes our Competition one of the premier regional Opera Competitions in the country.
The Guild would like to extend our profound appreciation to the Fine Arts Foundation for their generous support. Through you, we help to make the dreams of these talented young Colorado singers a reality.”
